Teacher in Charge is not a standalone role but rather an extra set of duties given to teachers wishing to take on more responsibiity, for which an hourly rate of £17.66 is paid.

Great for anyone looking who’s got a Senior Teacher or a DOS role in their sights but needs to add some management experience to their CV!

Duties

  1. The TIC is responsible for reporting if further coffee, pens, chalk etc are needed.
  2. The TIC is responsible for the safekeeping of materials belonging to KIC Salisbury and is also expected to keep an inventory of these materials and to ensure that they are safely returned when the centre is vacated.
  3. Any damage should be reported immediately.
  4. The TIC is also responsible for ensuring that a reasonable degree of tidiness is maintained in the classrooms.
  5. The TIC is responsible for maintaining good relations between staff and students and the course centre staff.
  6. The TIC should acquaint him/herself with the local person in charge at the centre (bursar, assistant head teacher, caretaker or whoever) and should act, wherever possible, as liaison between the centre and main school.
  7. The TIC should support the teaching staff with training sessions, support and advice.
  8. A support network of mentors should be set up by the TIC.
  9. The TIC should check that all teachers at the centre are present 10 minutes before the start of lessons and phone the school immediately if this is not the case. The TIC should take suitable action, having phoned the school, to keep the relevant class busy – temporarily combining classes, setting exercises/activities etc. until the teacher or a stand-by arrives.
  10. The TIC is also responsible for making sure that staff and students start and finish lessons at the correct times.
  11. The TIC should require all teachers at the centre to report student absences to him/her immediately. The TIC should then immediately inform the office at the main school. For reasons of the safety of minors in our care, the above must be strictly adhered to.
  12. The TIC should acquaint him/herself with local regulations and customs concerning emergency situations – fire, accident or illness and make sure that other teachers are conversant with them.
  13. The HS TIC should arrange a fire practice drill on every Tuesday morning. He/she should know well the fire procedures, and know who to contact locally in case of accident or illness. Where no-one is available in the latter case, he/she should immediately phone the school and report the situation.
  14. The TIC should be acquainted with the rules applicable within the centre with regard to general behaviour – e.g. no smoking rules, places which are in/out of bounds to our students, and should enforce these rules when necessary. He/she should give new students a short talk about local regulations and show them the fire exits at break time on their first morning at breaktime.
  15. The TIC should deal with any minor disciplinary problems on the spot, to the best of his/her ability. Major disciplinary problems should be reported to the Line Manager as soon as is possible.
  16. The TIC should liaise with regard to the movement of registers at the end of each week.
  17. Normally an Activity Leader will be present at centres during break time to supervise students and give teachers a more relaxed coffee break. Should an organiser not be present, however, the TIC will be responsible for arranging supervision. Students must be supervised at all times during breaks.
  18. To be aware of any teachers taking their students off-site and ensuring that those teachers have filled in the ‘Off-site’ form in the TIC’s classroom. They must ensure that the Activity Leader has visited the class before departing.
  19. Any further responsibilities pertaining to particular centres will be explained on appointment.
  20. The TIC is expected to maintain daily contact to receive any messages/instructions from the DOS or AM


Candidate profile

  • Trinity Cert or CELTA

  • 2 years + experience

  • Evidence of continued professional development

  • Good people skills

  • Computer Literate

  • Good knowledge of teaching materials and websites

  • Experience running training sessions

  • Strong teaching ability

Salary £17.66 per hour.

You will also be entitled to 0.6 days paid holiday per week worked which may be taken at the end of the working period and during the contract in exceptional circumstances only. Over a 4-week contract this gives you 2.4 days paid leave and over a 6-week contract, 3.6 days paid leave.
