Kaplan's History

Let us tell you about Kaplan and how we have come to be the international provider of international education that we are today.

Kaplan was founded in 1938 by Stanley H. Kaplan. He began by tutoring students for the New York State Regents Exam, a qualification which boosts students’ chances of getting into a top college, in the basement of his parents’ home in Brooklyn, New York. He believed that everyone should have the right to a good education and many of his students were from immigrant families, eager to pursue higher education and achieve success in America.

Kaplan recognised how important standardized testing was for assessing college applicants. Despite the test’s producers advising students that they need not prepare for the tests, he saw differently and started to tutor and prepare students for the SATs. Word soon spread about the success Kaplan’s students were having and the classes were soon full to bursting. His business grew rapidly as more and more colleges across the United States started to use standardized testing methods to assess the applicants. By 1975 Stanley H. Kaplan expanded his business across the country and had test preparation centers in 23 cities across the US. When asked what his middle initial stood for, Stanley H. Kaplan routinely said, "Higher scores."

By 1984, Kaplan had opened more than 100 centers nationally with around 600 part-time satellite offices serving 95,000 students a year. Later on in the year The Washington Post Company bought Stanley H. Kaplan Educational Centers Ltd. and Kaplan continued working there as President and CEO.

In 1994 Kaplan retired from the Stanley H. Kaplan Educational Centers, Ltd so that he could spend more time working on the Foundation he created. In August 2009 he passed away at the age of 90, leaving his legacy to millions of students and Kaplan employees.

Kaplan International Colleges

In 2006, as a result of a merger between Kaplan, Inc. and Aspect Education, Kaplan  Aspect emerged. Kaplan  Aspect operates under Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions division, the English language training division of Kaplan, Inc.

Kaplan was established in 1938 and provides educational and career services to individuals, schools and businesses, while Aspect, headquartered in London, UK, was established in 1967 as a provider of educational programs and services to students and professionals.

The merger combined Kaplan’s 17 schools within the English language training division with Aspect’s 19 international schools. Kaplan  Aspect continued to expand its network with the acquisition of the International House Queensland in Australia in 2007 and the Pacific Language Institute (PLI) in Canada in 2008 and the WELS Group in 2009.

In September 2009 Kaplan announced it combined its international English language division, Kaplan  Aspect, and university preparation programs, Kaplan International Colleges, into one business unit under the Kaplan International Colleges name.

Kaplan International Colleges (KIC) has educational partnerships with top UK universities that deliver academic programs to prepare students for entry to higher education degree programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
