5 Reasons Why Portland is the Best City in the USA

Once considered nothing more than a sleepy town in the Pacific Northwest, Portland has grown from an overlooked town into the best city in the US. You can find Kaplan's English school on NW 13th Ave, just blocks from a few beautiful parks.

Here's a list of things that make Portland a favorite of Kaplan English students.

1: Beautiful Nature

Even though Portland is a pretty big city, it's surrounded by some beautiful natural landmarks. There's Mt. Hood in the distance, filling the skyline with its majestic glory. Then there's the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Here you'll find over a hundred different hiking trails complete with great scenery and tons of waterfalls.

2: Art Scene

Portland has a growing contemporary art scene that's drawn some attention in the last few years. Artists have migrated here from around the country and set up shop, displaying their work in unique locations, like an old crabbing ship and more. It's not quite the more traditional gallery setup you'll find in New York or Chicago, but there's definitely momentum building.

Portland also has a strong indie music scene, if that's more your thing. Enjoy visiting the live music venues that can be found all over town.

3: Food Culture

From street food to fine dining, the city has something to offer every person and taste bud. Portland's restaurant scene is alive and thriving, with local coffee shops that rival any city in the country. There's a big emphasis on sourcing all the ingredients locally, too.

5 restaurants to check out when you're here:

  • Pok Pok
  • Le Pigeon
  • Beast
  • Ox
  • Ned Ludd

4: Homemade Alcohol

You're going to need something to wash all that food down with. Luckily, Portland is also well-known for their locally produced alcohol, from wine, to beer, and now, more recently, liquor. Whatever your poison, there's something here for you.

5 distilleries to look out for:

  • Clear Creek Distillery
  • House Spirits
  • Bull Run Distilling Company
  • 4 Spirits Distillery
  • Cornelius Pass Roadhouse

5: Soccer

Portland doesn't call itself “Soccer City USA” for nothing. In a country where American football is vastly more popular than international football, Portland has shown incredible support for their professional team, the Timbers.

They also have one of the oldest college clubs in the nation, the University of Portland Pilots. You won't find this kind of enthusiasm for soccer in most American cities.
