5 Reasons Why Santa Barbara is the Best City in the USA

Santa Barbara has a lot going for it, enough to make it the best city in the country, in fact. You'll even find a Kaplan English school on the Santa Barbara City College campus.

Check out why Kaplan students around the world can't wait to learn English here.

1: Earth Day

A huge oil spill off Santa Barbara's coast in 1969 created a spark throughout California. Then Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day – a time set aside to honor and protect the environment – in response to the disaster. Santa Barbara participated in the first Earth Day in 1970 and has been one of the “greenest” and most environmentally friendly cities in the country ever since.

2: Amazing Weather

Santa Barbara is sunny 300 days out of the year, and the city's average temperature through all four seasons is 64 degree Fahrenheit. It's never too hot and never too cold. It doesn't get much better than that, in our opinion.

The ideal climate makes it hard to resist spending time outdoors, whether it's going for a bike ride or just lounging.

3: Avocados

That weather we mentioned makes for some great agricultural opportunities. Santa Barbara and other parts of California are some of only a few areas in the country prime for growing avocados. In fact, the city is considered the first in the US to grow them, thanks to saplings that were brought over from Mexico in 1871. It also became home to the first commercial avocado orchard in the country not long after.

Today, Santa Barbara and other nearby cities continue to account for the majority of the avocados grown in America.

You know the motto: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. Luckily, Santa Barbara is a great place for ice cream lovers. We're talking about local parlor McConnell's Ice Cream, arguably one of the best places to enjoy a scoop in the entire country. Just save some for us.
