-
Food
From afternoon tea to pub grub, bustling food markets to sophisticated fine dining, vegan to halal, Manchester has something to satisfy all taste buds. With all the rocking out and vintage clothes shopping, it’s important to refuel and eat, and luckily your students won’t be short of options. For a variety of cuisines, head to the Corn Exchange, where your students will find a range of restaurants under one roof, or the Altrincham Market House or Affleck’s Palace, where you can shop and eat at one of the great food stalls all in one place!
No matter what your preferences are, no matter what your budget is, your students will experience delicious cuisine while studying in Manchester.
-
Nightlife and music
As the birthplace of some of the greatest British rock bands of all time – including The Stone Roses, Oasis, The Smiths, The Hollies, The Verve, and Elbow – Manchester is full of pubs, clubs and music venues. Your students can watch live music at the iconic Sound Control or the O2 Ritz and enjoy up-and-coming artists, or for something a little more underground, there’s the South Nightclub and Hidden, which is just as mysterious and exciting as it sounds.
If your students just want to head to the pub for the evening with friends, then Grand Central, The Salisbury, and The Crown and Anchor are all great places to hang out. And of course, the Circus Tavern is a must-visit as the smallest pub in Europe!
-
Football
When it comes to football, there are few teams in the world that are more renowned and recognizable than Manchester United and Manchester City – and they’re both from the same city! Let your students discover the history and cultural significance of the sport for themselves while touring the Etihad and Old Trafford stadiums. They might even get to watch a game in person and experience the unique thrill of supporting the teams with the rest of the community.
-
Culture and history
With a fascinating history and unique city culture, there are many museums and landmarks in Manchester that your students are sure to enjoy exploring. Our favorites include The Pankhurst Centre, which is where the first Suffragette meeting took place, and the Manchester Museum, where you can find a fossilized Tyrannosaurus Rex named Stan.
If your students are into the arts, there are also a number of theatres where they can view some of Britain’s most exciting performance art. The Royal Exchange is the most famous, but there’s also the Hope Mill Theatre and HOME. For some cutting-edge stand-up comedy, there’s also the Frog and Bucket.
-
Excellent public transport and connections
Manchester is a thriving metropolis, so of course it has a well-connected train station and airport. If at the weekend your students wish to take a break from studying and explore the rest of the UK – or even Europe – they can do so with ease. Via train, they can travel to the fantastic nearby cities of Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, and Edinburgh (although it does take over three hours)! Even getting to London doesn’t take that long, with the fastest trains only taking about two hours.
If your students need a break from city life, there are also many nearby areas of natural beauty that they can relax in and enjoy. The stunning Peak District is only an hour away, while the iconic Lake District is two hours away. Exploring the wonders of the UK has never been easier!
