An Interview with Laura Corbilla, Graphic Designer/Illustrator at Kaplan International
Meet Laura, a member of our design team at Kaplan International. Laura makes sure all the materials our students work with are beautiful, accessible and easy to understand. We spoke to her about life before Kaplan and her amazing language abilities.
How many languages do you speak?
I speak Spanish, Catalan and English, and I can have basic conversations in Ilocano (a dialect from the Philippines), French and Portuguese.
What made you learn other languages and how did you learn?
I was brought up speaking two languages and studied French at school. Half of my family is from the Philippines, which is why I learnt Ilocano. I also have a half-sister in Australia so I went there to study English and spend time with her. While working at Kaplan I was able to take free Portuguese lessons.
How have your language skills helped your career?
Thanks to speaking other languages I’ve been able to work in different locations across the world, and my advanced English skills have allowed me to have a good relationship with my colleagues.
What is your experience of living abroad and what is your favorite thing about it?
I love living abroad; especially in London since it’s a city that offers a huge range of different activities that you can do every day of the week. I also love meeting new people and I’ve met many friends from lots of different countries.
What brought you to Kaplan?
It’s a well-known company with a good reputation. I love languages and design and here I found the perfect match; I can illustrate and design to help children learn English.
What did you do before working at Kaplan?
After I completed my degree in Advertisement and Communications, I worked as a Designer/Illustrator in several companies where I worked on accessory design, music promotion, corporate identities, among other things. I then chose to do my MA at the London College of Communication. After my MA I worked as a freelancer until I joined Kaplan in 2012.
What do you like the most about your job?
I really like to illustrate and design for children. And I also get to work with an amazing design team that fully supports one another.
Which is your favorite Kaplan destination and why?
Australia, since I’ve lived there and I love it. Can I move there?
What is the best thing about working in such an international environment?
I’ve been able to do Portuguese and French lessons, meet people from all over the world and learn new things about different cultures.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are photography, drawing, painting, cycling, swimming, cooking, gardening, handcrafting, socializing and dancing.
Tell us about a funny thing that happened to you recently.
We were celebrating a colleague’s birthday in the office by presenting him with a birthday cake with over 30 candles on top. As we started singing happy birthday, the smoke from all the candles caused the office fire alarm to go off. We almost had to evacuate the whole building!
