Whitney Houston Hit is Top Love Song for English Learners

Whitney Houston’s classic ballad "I Will Always Love You" is the most popular love song amongst English learners, according to a new study.

Research by Kaplan International Colleges, a world leader in international education, revealed that 55% of English learners have serenaded someone with an English language love song and that Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You” was the most popular.

With Valentine's Day less than a week away, Kaplan discovered that 17% of English learners have practiced their language skills by singing Houston's hit from her 1992 movie, "The Bodyguard" to a loved one.

“I Will Always Love You” beat off competition from Brian Adams’ “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)”, which polled 16% and Celine Dion’s “My Hear Will Go On”, which claimed 14% of the vote respectively.

James Robert Parish, author of Whitney – We Will Always Love You, said: “Dolly Parton had a huge record hit in 1974 singing her wistful composition “I Will Always Love You.” However, today it is Whitney Houston’s bravura performance of the song from her film The Bodyguard (1992) that remains indelibly in the minds of music lovers around the world. The song’s lyrics, vocalized in epic fashion by Houston, speak directly to listeners everywhere . . . anytime.

“It’s very emotional message is that a romance-here being terminated by a strong woman-will end hopefully in the ex-lovers’ mutual respect for one another. It is the essence of timeless romantic fantasy. Whitney’s powerful yet vulnerable rendition of the song makes its highly-charged points unforgettable.”

Houston’s cover won the 1994 Grammy Award for Record of the Year and to mark the first anniversary of her death the Awards organisers said they will show an hour-long TV special entitled "The Grammys Will Go On: A Death in the Family" that will air the day before the 2013 ceremony.

More than 1,000 English learners took part in Kaplan’s “language of love” survey and the English language courseproviders have created the “Is English the Language of Love?” Infographic to showcase the results.
