サンフランシスコのホームステイやレジデンスでの食事情報をお届け！
もしアメリカでホームステイするなら、日々アメリカ人が何を食べているか見るチャンスがあるよ。
殆どの家族は彼らの家族の背景をベースに料理するので、それは全然伝統的なアメリカ料理ではないんだ。例えば、韓国系アメリカ人ファミリーは韓国に居る家族と似たような食事を食べるかも知れないし、一方メキシコ系アメリカ人はメキシコに居る家族と似た料理を食べるかも知れない（僕のように家族の先祖をすっかり忘れているアメリカ人は食料品店“Trader Joe’s”の冷凍売り場で何でもいいのでセール品を単に食べてるけどね）。
サンフランシスコは19世紀から大きなアジアンコミュニティがあって、ホストファミリーが中国やフィリピンで家族が食べていたものと似たものを料理してくれる可能性がとても高いんだ（フィリピン料理は時々すごくスパイシーなのを覚えておいて！）。もちろん、ファミリーはアメリカで異なったスタイルの料理も学んでるので、ホストファミリーがイタリアンディナーや、ハンバーガー、ホームメイドのピザのようなものが時々出るのは珍しくないんだ。ホストファミリーが生徒に夕食を作ってもらい、彼らの文化をホストファミリーに紹介してもらったりすることもあるんだ。ホストファミリーの料理を手伝うことは、彼らを知り、英語の勉強をする素晴らしい方法だよ。そして、食べ物が自分の好みの方法だと確信するようになるよ！
もしダウンタウンの学生ホテルへの滞在を選ぶなら、学校へはとても近いんだけど、自分で料理する必要があるんだ。
ホテルには広いキッチンとダイニングスペースがあって、コンロやシンク、オーブンなど料理に必要なツールは何でもあるんだ。多くの生徒達は一緒に料理をしてキッチンで何が出来るか見せたり出来るので、この時間を楽しんでいるよ。それにホテルの近くには多国籍な食料品店がたくさんあるので、日本にある料理が絶対作れるよ。ホームステイでは、ホストファミリーと素晴らしい関係が築けると思うけど、レジデンスでは他のカプランの学生と素晴らしい関係が築けるんだ。多くの学生は両方やっているよ。

If you live in a homestay in an American city, you’ll have the chance to see what American people eat on a day-to-day basis. There isn’t really any such thing as “traditional American food” since most families will cook based on their family’s background. For example, Korean-American families may eat food that is similar to families in Korea, while Mexican-American families may eat food similar to families in Mexico. (As for me, an American who has completely lost touch with his family’s ancestry, I just eat whatever’s on sale in the frozen section at the grocery store “Trader Joe’s.”)
San Francisco has had a large Asian community since the 19th Century, so there is a strong possibility that your host family may cook food similar to what families eat in China and the Philippines. (Keep in mind – Filipino food is sometimes very spicy!) Of course, families learn all different styles of cooking in the USA, so it’s not uncommon for host families to sometimes do an Italian dinner, a hamburger dinner, or even a homemade pizza dinner. Some host families will let their students cook dinner on some nights so that they can introduce their culture to the host family. Helping your host family to cook is a great way to get to know them, to practice your English, and to make sure that the food is the way that you like it!
If you choose to live in our downtown student hotel, you will be very close to school, but you will need to cook for yourself. The hotel has a huge kitchen and dining space, and you will have access to stoves, sinks, ovens, and all of the tools that you will need to cook anything you want. Many students enjoy this time because they can all cook together and show off what they are able to do in the kitchen. There are also many international grocery stores near the hotel, so it is definitely possible to cook food that you might have in Japan. In the homestay, you will build a great relationship with your host family, but in the residence, you will build great relationships with other Kaplan students. Many students end up doing both!
