In January of 1848, a man named James Marshall was walking along the American River in California when he noticed something sparkling in the water. He reached in and pulled out a handful of gold. He told the local newspaper, and within weeks, thousands of miners were racing to California to get rich. At this time, San Francisco was a small town of only a few hundred people, but by the following year, the population had grown to the thousands. These new residents became known as “forty-niners” because they arrived in San Francisco in 1849 (“eighteen forty-nine”).
Today, the word “Forty-Niners” has a different meaning: it is the name of the San Francisco football team. Of course, in the USA, traditional football – which we call “soccer” – is not as popular as it is in the rest of the world. When Americans say “football”, they usually mean “American football.” Every big city in the USA has a football team, and the name of the team is usually something related to the history of the city.
Tickets for American football games are very expensive and hard to get. It is a violent game, and players may receive serious injuries during play. For this reason, there are only a few games a year. If you want to see a football game, come to San Francisco between September and December, and buy the tickets in advance. San Francisco also has an excellent baseball team called the “San Francisco Giants.” Baseball tickets are very cheap because there are so many games every year.
