درس سريع في اللغة الانجليزية: استخدام Whether و If

بشكل رسمي، تُستخدم كل من If و whether في أمثلة محددة جداً في اللغة الانجليزية، وتعطي الجمل معاني مختلفة، فمتى يتم استخدام كل منهما؟

عندما تكون الجملة شرطية. (هذه جملة لا يمكن أن تحدث إلا في حال وقوع فعل محدد).

.Charlie didn't know If Alice was going away for the weekend

عندما نريد إظهار وجود خيارين من النتائج المحتملة.

.Charlie didn't know whether Alice was going to the beach or the mountains for the weekend

النتيجة واحدة غير معلن عنها، ولكن مفهومة، كما في الأسئلة غير المباشرة.

.Charlie didn't know whether Alice was going away on Friday

.Charlie didn't know If Alice was going away on Friday

في هذا المثال، عبارة “or not” مفهومة. إذاً، Alice قد لا تغادر يوم الجمعة. لأن الخيار الآخر لا يحتاج إلى أن يكون ظاهراً، يمكنك استخدام whether أو If.

- توجد صيغة المصدر مع “to”.

.Charlie didn't know whether to invite Alice to the party on Saturday

إذا اخترت استخدام If لن تصلح الجملة

.He didn't know if to invite Alice

- هناك حرف جر

.Charlie wanted to have a conversation with Alice about whether she was away for the weekend

- تُستخدم الكلمة “or”

.Charlie didn't know whether to call or text to find out about her plans

- عندما تبدأ فقرة من الجملة بشرط يكون فاعل الجملة.

.Whether Alice could come or not, Charlie was still going to throw the party, even If it was for Alice’s birthday
