Do I need to attend a Studienkolleg?

Our University Pathway program will provide you with a free-of-charge evaluation of your academic background. If your diploma or academic qualifications is not fully accepted as equal to the German equivalent (usually the German Abitur), you will need to attend a Studienkolleg before entering university. Studienkollegs offer a preparation program covering a variety of subjects, taught in German. The program concludes with a final exam called Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) – you will need to pass this to apply directly to any German university.

What are the academic requirements for entering a Studienkolleg?

Depending on your chosen subject and country of origin, you might need German proficiency of at least a B2 level to enter a public or private Studienkolleg. You will also usually need to take an entry test – there are numerous Studienkollegs in Germany, and several entry tests can be taken at different Studienkollegs. We will help you with selecting the right Studienkolleg for your needs and arranging the entry tests. You will be able to take preparatory courses at Alpadia to make sure you pass the competitive entry tests of your preferred Studienkollegs.

Do I need a visa to study in Germany?

EU applicants do not need a visa for the Academic Pathway Program.

Non-EU applicants: A study-applicant-visa will allow you to improve your German at our schools in Berlin or Freiburg while you learn about the study options available to you in Germany. Once you've fulfilled the language requirements, you will be able to get a student visa without the need to go back to your home country.

Do I need to open a blocked bank account?

Non-EU applicants must provide proof of adequate financial resources before moving to Germany.

To do this, you will have to open a blocked bank account during your visa application, which will serve as proof of funds. Once money is deposited, you cannot withdraw funds until you arrive in Germany (which is why it is called a ‘blocked’ account), and it is worth noting that there will be a monthly limit to how much you can withdraw.

Non-EU applicants: During the preparatory phase it is not possible to work as a student or at best it might be possible to work during the winter and summer holidays. However, once you enter university, it is possible to work part-time as a student in Germany.

EU applicants can reside in Germany with no restrictions.

Non-EU applicants: Upon successfully finishing your degree of choice at a recognized German university, you can receive an 18-months-long visa to look for a job in your field of expertise. During this period, you have the right to do unspecialized student jobs. Once you receive a job contract in your field of expertise you can switch from a student visa to a job visa without having to go back to your home country.

The answer to this depends on what course you choose. Kaplan Online English 123 is open to students from Elementary to Advanced. Unfortunately, these courses are not suitable for Beginners. Proficiency students can benefit from these courses, however we recommend they take part in a trial first.

However, our IELTS Preparation course requires you to be at an Intermediate level before joining to get the most out of the classes.

Under-18s studying on Adult (16+) courses

Students aged 16 or 17 are allowed to study on adult courses with students aged 18 and above. They are permitted to join any class which is suitable for their level of English and can change classes where possible
All Kaplan International Languages schools have a senior member of staff (Local Safeguarding Lead) who has responsibility for the safety of students under the age of 18. This member of staff will meet with students aged under 18 and be available in the school to assist with any welfare issues
The curfew time for under-18s on adult courses is 23:00
Students are expected to attend all classes and any absence will be followed up immediately (within 30 minutes of the lessons starting)
Students aged 16 or 17 are usually required to live in Kaplan host family accommodation. Exceptions to this would be where the school has residential accommodation suitable for students aged 16 or 17 or where the parents have given written consent for their child to live with a suitable adult who is known to them. The school must have confirmation of this private accommodation address pre-arrival and if there is any change of address the student must be update the school
Adult school leisure programs include activities that are suitable for under-18s. Some activities may only be suitable for students aged 18 or over and 16 or 17 year old students are not allowed to attend these under any circumstances
If an adult class includes students aged 16 or 17, teachers ensure topics discussed are appropriate for this age range
There is no supervision of students on their way to and from school, during lunch/breaks or after class
Adult student inductions include information for under-18s about age-restricted activities in the UK, and about age-appropriate opportunities for learning and socializing outside of the classroom
Schools hold regular meetings for all students under the age of 18. Attendance at these meetings is not compulsory but is strongly recommended

The junior summer camps are exclusively for students aged 12–17. Junior closed group courses

Students aged 12–17 may also attend junior courses as part of a closed group, accompanied by one or more Group Leaders. Junior closed groups are usually school groups who come to us during the academic year for one or two weeks, often as part of their regular academic curriculum in their country. Junior closed group courses typically consist of 15 hours of tuition per week, accommodation and meals, and a program of activities and/or excursions requested by the group (often with advice from the Kaplan school)
Junior closed group courses may occasionally include students within the group who are outside the 12–17 age group. In such cases, approval is requested from the Compliance team and, if this is granted, the parents/guardians of the under-18s are required to sign consent forms confirming that they are happy for their child/children (under 18 years of age) to study in a class with (a) student(s) over the age of 18

Junior Summer Camps and closed groups

It is compulsory for under-18s to attend all scheduled lessons and activities which make up their course
Students aged 12–13 travel to and from school in pairs or small groups. They are not allowed out in the evening without adult supervision except for scheduled school activities, after which they are accompanied home by an adult. The curfew for 12/13-year-olds is 22:00
